Presidency Message:

Dear Brethren,
Recently I was listening to a returned missionary share an experience from his mission. While tracting he and his companion met a woman who was clearly distraught and told the elders she didn’t have time to talk religion. She was holding a crying baby and things in general seemed to be chaotic. One elder started to excuse themselves recognizing this wasn’t good timing for trying to teach a discussion. The other elder said, “let us help you out.” The woman was reluctant but the elder insisted, stating, “We are servants of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is clear that he has sent us to you to help you. Let us help you with your children or wash some dishes.” She finally gave in. The elders helped to calm the baby, do a few other chores and listen to her problems. The woman was very touched by their sincere desire to help her. She commented that it had been a very long time since someone had come to her door asking how they could help rather than wanting something from her. She became convinced that these young men really had been sent to her. She later invited them to come teach her and she was baptized. These elders learned important lessons about meaningful service and how the Lord truly will lead us to those in need.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our young men could have truly meaningful service opportunities prior to their missions? This would include experiences where individually the young men would come away feeling that they really had given of themselves. Remember that your calling is all about teaching and training young men to be honorable priesthood bearers. Use your service activities to teach. Here are a few points to consider:
1. Help quorum leaders carefully select appropriate and meaningful service activities.
2. Teach why we serve (e.g. Mosiah 2:17)
3. Train them to develop instinctive service-mindedness – not waiting to be assigned or told to serve, but to see a need and ACT
4. Take time following service activities to discuss the experience – how did they feel, what did they learn, etc.
5. Often serving in smaller groups is more effective and impactful (e.g. three young men visiting with an elderly person at a rest home as opposed to twenty youth singing to a group at a rest home.)

This is by no means a complete list. Please prayerfully consider the quality of service experiences your young men are having. Thank you for your service to the young men. Thank you for your efforts to be effective mentors.

ANSWER: (page 182 Church Handbook of Instructions)
Trick question. Yes, a member of the bishopric should seek permission from a young man’s parents before extending a calling. However, a member of the bishopric usually announces changes in quorum leadership in sacrament meeting. He does not ask for a sustaining vote.

Presidency Message:

Dear Young Men Leaders,
I want to first say how much we appreciate your assistance; especially for Stake Fun Day. It seems a lot of assignments and information requests have been requested of you. Thank you for your help.
I have been pondering a thought lately that I’d like to share. We play a vital role in the lives of young men as their teachers and trainers. These are incredible young men with a heavy priesthood load awaiting them in the near future. We have a great opportunity to help their parents prepare them. May I offer a few suggestions/reminders?
• Prayerfully prepare for quorum instruction.
• Teach not just lecture.
• Assess understanding.
• Encourage effective participation.
Prayerfully Prepare. This generation of future leaders deserves more than a night-before prepared lesson. Carefully consider each young man and how he best learns and what he needs to understand. The lesson manual is not the teacher. “The manual says…” is not effective. The boys don’t need to know what the manual says; they need to know how you feel and what you know about the subject. It is your testimony not the manual’s (I hope this makes sense). We suggest you find ways to integrate Preach My Gospel into your lessons.

Teach, Not Lecture. Lecturing is one directional – dump the info on them. Effective teaching involves multiple methods to ensure principals are understood. The use of questions can be very effective but also a turn-off depending on how presented. For example, asking yes/no questions generally is not as effective as questions that require a longer answer or are open-ended. Asking follow-up questions also helps. For example, if you were to ask how you increase your spirituality, a young man might say, “by reading my scriptures.” Just ending there, misses an opportunity. Better to follow up with, “why or how does reading your scriptures accomplish this?” I realize that is a very simple example but I think you get the idea. The more we can drill down and give the young men an opportunity to think, the more impactful the lesson will be. Pausing while waiting for an answer is just fine – sometimes they just need a little time to think.

Assess Understanding. How do you know if they’ve understood what you were teaching them? A few concluding questions might help. Ask some of the young men to summarize key points of the lesson. Or ask them what they will do as a result of the lesson. There are several ways to see what they’ve gleaned – we just need to leave ourselves time at the end to make sure they’ve got it. Remember we are teaching, not just giving talks.

Encourage Participation. I already discussed the use of questions. You may also want to share lesson time with a member of the quorum. Give him 10 minutes or maybe even 5 minutes to help teach. Make clear expectations and provide coaching so that you can maximize the learning experience. This is especially important for the priests as they will soon be teaching investigators. Adult leaders not giving the lesson should be careful not to participate too much. Let the young men answer the questions.

And finally, make sure you take time to train your leaders. Make sure quorum presidents allow you time in presidency meetings for leadership training. Teach them leadership principles and demonstrate how to apply them.

I’m convinced that as we commit ourselves to being effective teachers the Lord will show us the way and we’ll experience great joy. Thank you for your contributions and sacrifices in behalf of these great young men!

Each quorum presidency holds regular quorum presidency meetings. The quorum president (including the Bishop for priests) preside over the quorum presidency meeting. Presidency members, corresponding bishopric counselors and advisers attend it. The quorum presidency take turns conducting. The presidency seeks guidance from the bishopric member and adviser in preparing the agenda.

Presidency Message:

Dear Brethren,
I hope you are finding much joy and satisfaction in your callings. I’ve had a thought on my mind lately. I was once visiting with a father of a youth who was straying a bit. The father was lamenting that despite his efforts he just wasn’t getting anywhere with this child. A comment he made struck deep into my heart and has stayed with me ever since. He said that his whole adult life had been devoted to helping save young men. Then he said, “now that I have my own child who needs to be saved, where is that leader who can help me?” I’ve pondered this over and over through the years. Even with their best efforts, parents sometimes just can’t connect with a certain child (or two). Some young men come from challenging home circumstances where there is parental negligence. We do not, nor should not, replace parents. But we can come to the rescue during seasons of challenge. Praise be to the youth leaders who are willing to sacrifice their time in ministering to the youth, one at a time; to be the answer to prayers in behalf of a young man who is lost!

The window of opportunity is short and the pace quick. That young, newly ordained deacon will soon be gone. That new teacher will soon be driving. That new priest will, in a flash, be off to college. I hope we are almost wearing ourselves out in behalf of our young men. I hope we can confidently say that we have given all we could give during that brief period we were with them in their quorums. I love the teachings of Christ to Peter and the other apostles (and all the rest of us) in John as he asks Peter three times if he loves Him. Each time Peter replies that he does. And each time the Savior instructs, “Feed my sheep!” The Savior surely already knew that Peter loved Him – that wasn’t the issue. He wanted Peter to know that we show our love for the Savior by serving others. I hope that we remember this simple but powerful principle as we serve; especially when it is inconvenient.
I am grateful to be associated with you. Thank you for your service.
Sincerely,
Matthew Clarke

Presidency Message:
Dear Brethren,
It was great being with so many of you for Basic Training on the 18th of March. Great things are happening with our youth throughout the stake. As we have been visiting quorums we continue to be impressed with the leadership and strength of the youth. We are seeing great examples of quorums being led properly. Recently, I observed the following in one of our priest quorums:
The 1st Assistant began the meeting without being prompted – he really took charge of the meeting. He formally welcomed me to their quorum meeting. Then he issued assignments (didn’t ask for volunteers) and discussed the Mutual activity for the coming week. He then discussed each quorum member not in attendance and made assignments to ensure a personal contact would be made to invite them to the Mutual activity. The adult leadership remained silent while the quorum leader conducted the meeting. Following quorum business the 1st Assistant turned the time to the quorum adviser for the lesson. The adviser suggested to the 1st Assistant that in the future they may want to do business at the end of the lesson so the late arrivers could all hear the assignments, etc. [this seemed like a pretty good idea to me]. The 1st Assistant countered the suggestion with, “I understand, but you, the bishop and YM president all give such great lessons – I don’t want my quorum members to miss any of your lessons. I can follow up with assignments for those who come late afterwards.” That is leadership! Following the lesson the 1st Assistant turned a few minutes over to me for a testimony and then challenged each quorum member to bring “Preach My Gospel” each week and emphasized its importance in preparing each of them for missions and stated that each of their quorum lessons would refer to it.
I’m not sure that my description here does justice to the quality of leadership I observed. This did not happen by accident. This young man had obviously been properly trained and then allowed to lead. This is how a quorum should function. I am so pleased with what we are seeing as we visit your quorums. Our expectations are very high. We commend you for all the good that you are doing in your service. Please continue to share with us your successes and know that we are anxious to help in any way that is needed.
Sincerely,
Matthew Clarke

Activities should frequently give young men opportunities to provide meaningful service to others. Such activities can help them develop a lifelong practice of serving others.
Under the guidance of Aaronic Priesthood leaders, young men may select individual, quorum, or group service activities. Major service activities are circulated and scheduled in ward council meetings. After each activity, the young men should be invited to share their feelings about it and what they learned from it.

Newsletter March 2010

Presidency Message:
Dear young men leaders,
Thank you for your commitment to serving young men. I’d like to take a few minutes to emphasize proper quorum leadership. Sometime this fall one of your priests may find himself in a Stake Presidency members’ office in a student stake receiving a call to be president of an elders quorum. Will he know how to preside over a quorum? Will he know how to sit in council with them? Will he know how to teach them according to the covenants (see D&C 107:89)? We all know the Aaronic Priesthood is a preparatory priesthood. Preparing for what? May I suggest they are preparing for future leadership in the church? If we review D&C 107:85-87 we see the same job description for each quorum president. A deacons quorum president has the same responsibilities as the elders quorum president. Note the only difference is the number of quorum members.

Are our Aaronic Priesthood quorums led in the same manner as our Melchizedek Priesthood quorums?

Our task is to make sure those with priesthood keys (quorum presidents only), exercise them properly and those who do not have keys do not act as if they do. We have a tremendous responsibility to help these young men understand the significance of priesthood keys and teach them how to fulfill the three items noted in the scriptures listed above—preside, sit in council, and teach. The bishop and elders quorum president are the only adult leaders in a ward with keys. The rest of us are to advise, teach and coach. We are often the ones getting in the way of these young men leading properly. We need to let the young men lead. Here is an example of how a presidency meeting should operate (see AP Handbook, p.184)

Quorum Presidency Meeting (think about how your Elders quorum presidency meetings function)
• Working from an agenda prepared by the quorum secretary (not adviser), the quorum president (or counselor – but not secretary) conducts the meeting. He doesn’t wait to be told to start – it is his meeting.
• He turns to the secretary to review the minutes of the prior meeting; especially action items.
• The quorum leader leads the meeting consistent with instructions in the Aaronic Priesthood Handbook – p.184.
• Adults should generally sit quietly until the time is given them for leadership instruction.
• Let them stumble along a bit; let them feel the weight of responsibility. They can do it.

You may have noticed that a young man (Spencer Foster) conducted the youth fireside, not me. He is the co-chairman of the stake youth council. Spencer made assignments for prayers and music. Our priest/laurel activity was planned by our stake youth council. It was their idea, not the adults. The council was involved in every aspect of the activity. We are trying to turn more and more over to the youth. They need the experience. Let’s teach our quorum leaders properly and then let them lead. I promise that as we do so, we will see significant growth in them and we will experience greater satisfaction in our callings.

"Be Strong and of a Good Courage" Joshua 1:9

Presidency Message:

Ward Conferences have been rich, rewarding experiences for me. Thank you for providing opportunities to minister to your young men. As an example of the great ministering effort, this past week I was able to go with Dave Morgan, YM President of the Highland Ward. We visited a 15-year old unordained young man who lives alone with his single mother. We had a nice visit and then Dave invited him to attend Mutual for the following night. Although he had never been, he agreed to go. The following night he was picked up by a leader and taken to Mutual. Hopefully this young man is on his way to being “rescued”!

Throughout the month we visited several other “at risk” young men. Some are active but are still a concern; still considered at risk. May I suggest that each presidency do a thorough risk assessment of each young man in your quorums? Here are a few possibilities you might consider:
• Testimony – How strong is his testimony? Does he really believe?
• Circle of friends – What kind of friends does he have?
• Home life – are there healthy family relationships; is the gospel being
taught in the home; is it a single-parent home?
• Social challenges – Does he have many friends; is he awkward in social
settings; does he get out much or mostly stay to himself; does he have
healthy male associates?
• Physical condition – Is he physically active – could he handle the physical
rigors of a mission (if there are weight issues this could be a risk in
qualifying for a mission)?
• Church activity – How is his attendance?
• Work ethic – Is he a hard worker or is he lazy?
• Communication skills – Can he express himself effectively?
• Girlfriends – Does he have a steady girlfriend?

These are some points to ponder that could be impacting a young man’s spiritual health and general mission preparation. Once we’ve identified the concerns then we can more effectively minister to the needs of our young men.

Years ago I noticed a very active young man disappear from Church activity following high school graduation. I was stunned. I thought all was well. His activity level appears to have masked some serious concerns that appear to have slipped under the radar. Perhaps a more carefully assessment of his overall circumstances could have led to preventive measures being taken to keep him strong in the Church. May the Lord bless you as you minister to the young men of the Stake. Thank you for your diligence!
--Matthew Clarke, Stake YM President
